Informational meeting for Fall 2024 Golf season

Wednesday, June 12th, 2024

1. Sign up for our Remind class: add the class @birdiegolf or send a text to 81010 with @birdiegolf in the message.

2. Tryouts:  18 Mile Creek Golf Course, Hamburg, NY

-Monday, August 26th:  Meeting at 11:15am, 1st tee time is at 11:27am.  We should be done by 2-2:30ish.

-Tuesday, August 27th: Tee times start at 11:27am

-Wednesday, August 28th: Tee times start at 8:00am

-Thursday, August 29th: Tee times start at 8:30am

3. Meeting and 1st practice: Friday, August 30th: We will practice with tee times starting at 8:00am.  We will have a team meeting after practice from around 10:30am-11:00am.

4. Download the NYSPHSAA App for app scoring.  We will use this for tryouts.  Make sure that you sign in with the same email that you used last year if you are a returning player.  New players will need to make an account. Download the app to your phone from:

5. Tryout information:  This is a four day tryout where each player plays 9 holes each day. (Friday is a practice). Your top three nine hole scores will be used for team selection. We will play rain or shine, so be prepared either way. You will find out at the end of the day on Thursday if you are selected to the team.  There will be a players meeting on Friday morning after practice.

7. Dress attire and equipment:  Please wear a collared shirt to tryouts and all practices.  Players need their own equipment.  This includes golf clubs and bag, golf shoes w/soft or plastic spikes, golf glove, golf umbrella, water bottle and a snack.

8. Eligibility requirements

YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TAKEN CARE OF BY THURSDAY, AUGUST 15TH IN ORDER TO TRY OUT FOR THE TEAM:

1. Register on Operoo at https://www.hamburgschools.org/administration/athletics/sports_registration_1

(go to the hamburgschools.org, click on Departments, Athletics, Sports Registration, and Varsity Golf (when Fall Sports become available)  

2. You must have a current physical on file with the nurse and/or HPER office.  Call or email their office to check your status.  646-3344.  You may fax a physical to 646-3345.

Other important information:  We practice Monday-Friday in September and 1st week of October.  We may have some matches on Fridays this year.  Students should be aware that they are responsible for their own transportation to the Hamburg Golf Course after school for practices and our away match at Brierwood Country Club.  They should also be picked up from the golf course after practices or home matches.  For away matches, we will have a bus that leaves from and returns to the High School.  Golf clubs are not allowed on the regular school bus runs, but we can take them on the bus when we go to away matches.  

Keys to making the team : Practice and play as much as possible!  The team will be composed of the top 12 to 15 golfers.  Seniors will generally need to finish in the top 8 to make the team.  (The reason for this is that if you do not finish in the top 10, you will most likely not start during the season.  That roster spot would be better filled by a younger prospect that could develop into a  starter in the future.)  Junior High students  need to finish in the top 8 to make the team.  This is an ECIC rule. However, there may be a  team manager spot available for a good young prospect.
